Did the search engine scales tip?

Filed under: seo success stories — admin @ 11:08 pm

Yes! In the past year Yahoo! has dropped Google as its primary SERP (search engine results page). Yahoo! is now working with its own modified version of the Inktomi engine. (Inktomi is an old and respected name in the search industry).

Aside from this, MSN – with the deep pockets of Microsoft – has been gaining in popularity. In fact, MSN and Yahoo! now have more combined search traffic than Google, by about ten percent. Google has about 37% while MSN and Yahoo! combined have about 47% to 50% of the search market.

new seo book!

Filed under: seo books — admin @ 11:09 pm

As you might know, SEOpartner.com is sponsoring the creation of SEO Notebook, a collaborative effort from dozens of SEO experts worldwide packed to the bursting point with great SEO tips. What you might not know is that four of these SEO experts put their heads together on a side project called SEO Answer Book.

It started as an instant message conversation between a couple of the authors. They were commenting on the number of great questions they get every month from business owners, Webmasters and even other SEO experts. Before they realized it – they had the makings of a new book dedicated exclusively to answering those questions. They put out feelers among the other SEO experts on SEOpartner.com and pretty soon they had too much content!

They all agreed to create a single SEO book but in three sections: Business owners, Webmasters and SEO professionals. Thus began SEO Answer Book.

In its final editorial review right now, it will be ready for release on Monday November 14th. We’re really looking forward to this one. I read the first draft and the information was outstanding!

the long gray bar

Filed under: seo tips, insider seo tips — admin @ 11:17 am

“Gray-bar” is an SEO insider term used to describe what happens when Google bans your site and takes away your page rank. The term itself is referring to the color of the Google PageRank indicator bar that resides on the Google Toolbar, available at http://toolbar.google.com.

The background color of the bar should be white with an amount of green in it showing your PR, much like a horizontal thermometer reading. If the green fills 40% of the bar, your page has a PR of 4. Don’t worry if you’re not good at estimating horizontal thermometers. You can simply let your mouse hover over the PR bar and a tool tip will show the PageRank value or you can use the Google PR tool avaiable right here.

If the bar is all white, this means your page currently doesn’t have any accumulated PR. However, a gray bar is usually a good indicator that your page has been banned for some reason, such as employing Black hat SEO techniques. But don’t panic just yet. We’re told that on a couple occasions multiple pages have shown up gray-barred simply because a change was happening on Google’s end or the bar was just “buggy” at that time. Their rank – complete with green and white colors returned the next day.

seo sanity check

Filed under: seo tips, insider seo tips — admin @ 12:24 am

If after optimization, your page’s content sounds natural to a human visitor, it will probably appear valid to a search engine spider. However, don’t forget that the bots are still machines, and they analyze specific aspects of your text. Mainly, you should pay attention to the following properties:

1. Weight, also known as Density: This is the percentage of your key phrases in a given area, such as a META tag, or a page.

2. Prominence: This refers to how close your keyword is to the beginning of the analyzed area.

3. Frequency: This is the absolute number of the times a certain keyword is repeated in an area or another. Unlike Density, Frequency does not depend on the total number of words in the text.

4. Proximity: This refers to the distance between parts of your key phrase. While it’s always better to use a complete phrase, sometimes the language structure doesn’t allow this to happen. You’ll still have to keep the words as close as they can be in this case.
