In building a business, you can easily find many different ways to go through however, there isn’t one sure-fire way to do it. While most people start their business with a product or service and then a plan to monetize it, Pulizzi, the founder of Content Marketing Institute says “You build the content first, then monetize it. You find a content niche where you can be the leading expert in the world—no matter how small. It’s not the size of the audience it’s the focus on a need for information that’s going unmet.”
“The idea is that if you build your audience first, you’ll be able to sell them almost anything,” says Pulizzi.
Pulizzi provided these six steps to building a startup around content:
- Find out where your expertise lies.
- Content tilt – Go beyond the obvious and differentiate yourself.
- Foundation – Build the base and figure out what type of content you want to and are more inclined in creating as well as the most suitable platform you plan to use.
- Gathering audience is where you’re in subscriber mode, your whole goal is to build audience.
- Diversification – When you have focused on one platform, let’s say you started with a blog, you can now expand to Pinterest to build up your following and then move on to integrating brands into your channels.
- Monetization. This is where you start to build the business.
