There had been news that Google is pushing out real-time updates for both Penguin and Panda. However, webmasters have been noticing some inconsistencies with Google’s statement.
Overview
Panda targets sites with low quality content, while Penguin penalizes sites with unnatural and spammy links. Both updates run periodically, with Google making minor tweaks designed to improve the algorithms.
Lack of Notification
Google doesn’t inform a website if it has been hit with a penalty. Webmaster only find out about the penalty when they see a sudden drop in traffic after Google confirms an update. Despite repeated suggestions to include a penalty notification, Google has declined saying that this might enable spammers.
Long Recovery Period
A penalized website can remove all the shady links and produce quality content but until Google rolls out another Panda or Penguin update, the site will not notice any improvement on traffic and rankings.
Constant Penguin and Panda Updates
December 2014 – 6 weeks after confirming that a Penguin update has been fully rolled out, Google confused webmasters by saying that the update is still being rolled out.
March 2015 – Garry Illyes said they are constantly updating the Panda algorithm, making the Panda updates real-time. The last confirmed Panda update happened on September 2014.
April 2015 – John Mueller shared that he thinks Panda and Penguin are not real-time, and that they still do roll out the updates manually.
